By the Waters of Babylon

This prostopinije setting of By the Waters of Babylon can be found on pages 314-316 of the MCI Sunday Matins book.

This hymn, consisting of verses from Psalm 137 describing the Israelite exile in Babylon, is intended to have a wandering, mournful tone; the long phrases can be a challenge. If necessary, "steal" breaths rather than stopping the flow of the music in the middle of a phrase. Two cantors may wish to alternate. There is no refrain as such; the setting is meant to be sung "straight through." (Editor's note: I have seen a parish pick this up within 3 weeks, and it is quite memorable.)
