The Plainchant of the Byzantine Catholic Church

This course describes the history and organization of the liturgical chant used in the Byzantine (Ruthenian) Catholic Church, and is available at no charge to all church members.

The material in this course was originally taught as an online offering of the Byzantine Catholic Seminary. It is NOT required for cantor certification.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Discuss the background and history of church singing in the Churches of the Byzantine tradition;
  2. Explain the historical process that led to the development of prostopinije;
  3. Recognize the different kinds of chant used in divine services (ekphonesis, psalmody, hymnody) and how they are employed in the Church’s worship;
  4. Classify and describe the melodies of the prostopinije tradition;
  5. Discuss ways in which our church singing might be improved.

This course has no prerequisites, and it intended to be taken over a period of 8 weeks of study.
